A copy of this report can be found on the "Publications" page of this website or at: www.gov.mb.ca/waterstewardship/reports/index.html. (See Boards and Commissions section) In December 2006, the Lake Winnipeg Stewardship Board presented recommendations to the Manitoba Minister of Water Stewardship for protecting and improving the health of Lake Winnipeg and its watershed. The Minister has asked the Lake Winnipeg Stewardship Board to now evaluate and report on the actions the Manitoba Government has taken in implementing these recommendations. As part of this work, the Board is also detailing the general progress being made by non-provincial agencies toward achieving the recommendations. The Board is nearing completion of this report, and it is expected to be released in late 2009 or early 2010. Recognizing Success: The Lake Winnipeg Stewardship Board would like to hear about what actions individuals and organization have taken that will have a positive impact on protecting and improving the health of Lake Winnipeg and its watershed. Please submit your input in an electronic file and email it to Sharon.Gurney@gov.mb.ca. If you have any questions please contact: Sharon Gurney, Manitoba Water Stewardship at Sharon.Gurney@gov.mb.ca, 204-945-7114 We appreciate your input. BACKGROUND: The Lake Winnipeg Stewardship Board was announced by the government of Manitoba in February 2003 as one of the six actions under the Lake Winnipeg Action Plan. The role of the Lake Winnipeg Stewardship Board was initially to assist the government of Manitoba to achieve the main commitments in the Lake Winnipeg Action Plan of reducing phosphorus and nitrogen in the lake to pre-1970 levels. On February 14, 2007 the Minister of Water Stewardship renewed the membership and expanded the terms of reference for the Board. Board members represent a variety of interests, including fishing, agriculture, urban land use, First Nations, federal, provincial and municipal government, and non-governmental organizations. The Board reports through the Chair to the Minister of Water Stewardship. Reports and Publications: The Board’s reports and publications can be found on the “Publications” page of this web site. The Lake Winnipeg Stewardship Board's Interim Report (January 2005), contains 32 sets of recommendations. Following the release of the Interim Report, the Minister of Water Stewardship requested the Board undertake public discussions on the report with particular emphasis on four of the 32 sets of recommendations. The “Report on Public Discussion” (July 2005) documents the public response to the Lake Winnipeg Stewardship Board's Interim Report recommendations. Thank you to those that shared their views with the Lake Winnipeg Stewardship Board during the Public Discussion process. The input was very important and useful to the Board. The Board’s December 2006 three year term report – titled: “Reducing Nutrient Loading to Lake Winnipeg and its Watershed: Our Collective Responsibility and Commitment to Action” provides 38 sets of recommendations on actions to reduce nutrient loading to Lake Winnipeg and its watershed.
